ISMAIL GULGEE ( 1926-2007)




Gulgee ( Pronounced as Gul Ji ) has done Fantastic Portraits , Sculptures , Islamic Calligraphy , Abstract art and above all he remained a master of what is known as " Action Art " in America.
 Every Painting from his "Action Art ' series depicts action . Action or the moving force of Life.

Born in a well off Shia family from Peshawar ,Gulgee  studied at Aligarh , did his civil Engineering  and went to USA where he came under the influence of action painter Elaine Hamilton.



His wife Zarine was also from a well off family of Mumbai. Unfortunately in 2007, this brilliant artist, his wife and their maid servant were killed by some Killers at their karachi residence .


In his Book " INDIAN ART " Published by Oxford University Press, Partha Mitter mentions him in detail . The book deals with History of Art in the Entire south Asian subcontinent.
